My two oldest (longstanding) friends now both live in York, just a short drive apart, so it was easy to co-ordinate movements for trips and events.
After a nice stroll along the river at Beningborough Hall and a fabulous lunch in Easingwold, we ended the first day with an examination of the ruins of Byland Abbey.
Martin volunteers at the Yorkshire Arboretum, so that gave us an excuse to visit and have a great wander round. Some parts are more parkland-like than I would have imagined.
Growing up, I was very familiar with Hornsea Pottery, which was very popular at that time. I didn’t give much thought to where it came from, so I was intrigued when we hiked to Hornsea on our way to lunch in Beverley and found ourselves at the beach.
The final hike in York was one I had not imagined was possible, I had not thought you could walk along the River Ouse as it passes through the city. Given how straightened it appears, especially as for the most part there are buildings and other structures down to the waterside, I can’t imagine its course can now be called natural.
