This week we have been enjoying Christmas with Jill’s folks in Palo Alto. Yesterday we headed up to Sebastopol to catch up with a couple of her friends. On the way we stopped at the de Young Museum (part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco). The highlight was the David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition, which builds on, I think, from his A Bigger Picture show at the Royal Academy in London.
There were many paintings showing scenes from his East Yorkshire countryside, and I was struck by just how many had a prominent road or track running through them.
I thought, yes, obviously, this is why so many of my pictures include some form or idea of a path. I would have seen them everywhere, all the time, growing up and traveling in England!
